History of Stored Data
Did you know that the first record of data being reliably stored in a mechanized medium was using paper tape in 1846 by Alexander Bain – the inventor of the electric printing telegraph. Since that time, every year as technology innovation continues to accelerate, the volume, velocity, and variety (3vs) of data encoded and stored mechanically continue to expand.
The diagram below depicts the relative increase of data stored over time, together with the diversity and number of user creating and using data, and the variety of use cases for data. Complexity and cost are two other important factors that continue to increase. This is why the disciplines of enterprise data management are taking center stage in the 21st century.
